
Life insurance: Positive net inflows in December 2020
Net inflows for December 2020 were +€550 million. These were the first positive monthly net inflows since the start of the health crisis. These positive net inflows confirm the last two months trend of a progressive return to balance and demonstrate the trust of the French in Life Insurance.
In December, Insurance life premiums amounted to €12.8 billion, of which 37% were payments to unit-linked products. Paid-out benefits in December amounted to €12.3 billion.
For 2020 as a whole:
- Net inflows remained negative at −€6.5 billion (compared with positive net inflows of €21.9 billion in 2019).
- Cumulative life insurance contributions reached €116.3 billion (€144.6 billion in 2019). Payments to unit-linked products accounted for €40.1 milliards i.e. 34% of premiums (28% in 2019 for a similar amount).
- The total amount of benefits paid out amounted to €122.8 billion (122.7 billion euros in 2019) and therefore exceeded the total amount of contributions received by insurers.
At the end of 2020, in-force life insurance business stood at €1,789 billion. The proportion of this outstanding amount invested in corporate assets (stocks, bonds, real estate) exceeded 60%: it is now therefore nearly €1,100 billion that contribute to financing businesses.
