Life insurance: Positive net inflows in December 2020

Net inflows for December 2020 were +€550 million. These were the first positive monthly net inflows since the start of the health crisis. These positive net inflows confirm the last two months trend of a progressive return to balance and demonstrate the trust of the French in Life Insurance.

In December, Insurance life premiums amounted to €12.8 billion, of which 37% were payments to unit-linked products. Paid-out benefits in December amounted to €12.3 billion.

For 2020 as a whole:

  • Net inflows remained negative at −6.5 billion (compared with positive net inflows of €21.9 billion in 2019).
  • Cumulative life insurance contributions reached 116.3 billion (€144.6 billion in 2019). Payments to unit-linked products accounted for €40.1 milliards i.e. 34% of premiums (28% in 2019 for a similar amount).
  • The total amount of benefits paid out amounted to 122.8 billion (122.7 billion euros in 2019) and therefore exceeded the total amount of contributions received by insurers.

At the end of 2020, in-force life insurance business stood at €1,789 billion. The proportion of this outstanding amount invested in corporate assets (stocks, bonds, real estate) exceeded 60%: it is now therefore nearly €1,100 billion that contribute to financing businesses.
